Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) chief Raj Thackeray could spend the night in jail as he has been sent to judicial custody till November 4.
He has been granted bail in cases registered in the Kherwadi police station in Maharshtra. However, there are cases registered in the Kalyan police station as well. The police will take custody of Raj and present him in the Kalyan Court on Wednesday.
Earlier, Raj’s arrest had sparked violence in Maharashtra. Heavy stone pelting was witnessed outside Bandra court where he was produced.
Hundreds of MNS supporters gathered and pelted stones at the police, who retaliated by lathicharging them.
Many people have decided to stay home; trains are running empty and the city is fairly deserted.
Despite heavy police deployment, MNS workers tried to block traffic in Navi Mumbai.
Angry MNS activists attacked taxis in Parel and Mahalaxmi areas. Taxies parked at Tardeo in south Mumbai were also damaged by some unknown miscreants who fled on motorcycles, police said. Two separate incidents were reported in the north-west suburban of Borivali where miscreants attempted to burn trucks.
A toll booth located in the north-west suburban of Mulund was attacked and one of the counters was set on fire, police said. There were also reports of some unidentified men throwing stones at the suburban resident of Congress spokesperson Sanjay Nirupam.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh said, “Police have made their case. We will appoint good lawyers.”
