ambaniNew Delhi: The Union Government on Thursday filed its petition in the Supreme Court in the war between the Ambani brothers. The Government has already said that natural gas is the sovereign property of the country and any MoU between two private parties stands void in the national interest. All the three parties want a resolution to the crisis at the earliest. But they will have to wait for one more month as the Supreme Court will hear the case only in September. Anil Ambani’s Reliance Natural Resources Ltd (RNRL) has made the first move by going to the Supreme Court for an early resolution. His opponent and brother Mukesh Ambani-led Reliance Industries Ltd and the Union Government are also asking for an early end to the legal battle. “The court has appreciated the urgency in the matter and observed that they will try and hear it as early as possible and kept the date on September 1. On that day they will fix it to hear it on the same day or for as early as possible,” said RNRL advocate Mukesh Agarwal. The government has been dragged into the controversy by Anil Ambani who went public with his allegation that the Petroleum Ministry is siding with his brother. Under pressure to come clean on this the Government is working on a face saver. Sources have told CNN-IBN that the Law Ministry has been asked to examine Petroleum Ministry affidavit in Ambani gas dispute. Attorney General’s opinion has also been sought and no decision has been taken on amending the affidavit. Sources also say the Government has the sovereign right to decide on pricing and distribution policies With questions raised about the manner in which the Petroleum Ministry moved the Supreme Court, the government will have to walk a political and legal tightrope to escape more fire.
