NEW DELHI: Wild card entrants Somdev Devvarman and Prakash Amritraj’s challenge came to an end with second round defeat at the Australian Openon Friday.
Somdev Devvarman and Prakash Amritraj disappointed with a 1-6, 3-6 loss to the Sweden-Australian pair of Simon Aspelin and Paul Hanley.
Earlier on Thursday, doubles ace Mahesh Bhupathi, hampered by a calf muscle injury, bowed out of the Australian Open men’s doubles draw shortly after, the Bangalorean pulled out of the mixed doubles competition, where he was due to partner Sania Mirza.
Bhupathi, 36, said: “I injured my left calf muscle while training last Monday. Ideally, I needed to rest it for 10 days or so, but I didn’t have the time. I rested for sometime and I started training again. During my match today, I aggravated the injury. I met with the doctor again and I’ve been advised rest. I’ll be out of action for another 10 days. I’ll be returning home.”
That rules Bhupathi and Sania, reigning champions in the mixed doubles in Melbourne, out of the draw.
The duo, unseeded, was due to take on American Carly Gullickson and Australia’s Bernard Tomic in the first round.
