New Delhi : Somdev Devvarman will on Monday become the first Indian men’s singles player since Leander Paes to break into the top 100 rankings. This is the first time in 11 years that Indian men’s singles tennis player will make it to the elite club since Paes dropped out of that race in 1999.
Devvarman, who was ranked 103, going into the Farmers Classic singles event at Los Angeles beat fellow qualifier Steve Johnson 6-4, 6-4 in the first round match to pass into the double-digit rankings zone.
The Indian was clearly the dominating player but had to dig deep into his reserves to win long rallies against his opponent, ranked outside the 1000 bracket.
He faces sixth seed and world number 45 Serbian Janko Tipsaveric in the second round, but will feature in the ranking bracket irrespective of the result.
Meanwhile, Indian Davis Cupper Rohan Bopanna is competing in the doubles draw along with Pakistani partner Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi. The fourth-seed pair will open its campaign against the British combination of Colin Fleming and Ken Skupski.
